In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji (UTMF) for the first time. This prestigious 100-mile race circles the base of Mount Fuji, traversing stunning landscapes and challenging terrains. I completed this grueling race in huarache sandals.
Course Change and Preparation
The day before the race, we faced severe weather conditions, leading to a change in the course for safety reasons. This adjustment introduced new challenges, and while I was initially apprehensive about the altered course and deteriorating conditions, I relied on my preparation and my huaraches to tackle the race.
COVID-19 Restrictions
The 2022 UTMF took place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought about various restrictions. At race registration, a COVID-19 test was mandatory to ensure the safety of all participants and staff. Despite the additional requirements and precautions, the race proceeded, reflecting the resilience of the ultratrail community.
The Challenge
UTMF covers 165 km (102 miles) with an elevation gain of over 7,500 meters. Running in huarache sandals added to the difficulty, as I had to navigate diverse terrains and unpredictable weather. Despite the changes, the beauty of Mount Fuji and the rugged trail remained, pushing me to embrace every step of the journey.
Race Experience
The race began at the foot of Mount Fuji, leading us through dense forests and steep mountain paths. The direct contact with the ground through huaraches made each step feel intense, and I had to stay alert to manage the challenging conditions. The course changes introduced unexpected steep ascents and muddy paths, making the challenge even greater.
Running at night, with only the light from my headlamp and the serenity of the starry sky, was a unique experience. The gentle sound of huaraches on the trail added to the tranquility, though I had to remain cautious. Support from fellow runners and volunteers was a significant boost throughout the race.
Joy and Accomplishment
Finishing the UTMF in huarache sandals was a moment of immense joy and pride. Proving that it is possible to complete an ultratrail race in huaraches was a testament to my preparation and determination. Overcoming what many thought impossible was a profound achievement.
Crossing the Finish Line
After approximately 40 hours of running, I crossed the finish line at the FujikyuHighland still in my huaraches. Wrapped in fatigue and satisfaction, completing the Ultra-Trail Mt. Fuji in huarache sandals was a priceless experience, reaffirming my belief in pushing boundaries and embracing challenges.
