KOYASAN RYUJIN ULTRA

Marathon

This is a record of the road Ultramarathon held in Wakayama Prefecture in June 2019.The course starts at Koyasan, follows the Ryujin Skyline to the turnaround point at Ryujin Onsen, and then retraces the same route back to Koyasan, where the finish line is.
It’s 100km UltraMarathon with elevation gain of over 2,800m.

The elevation difference of 824 meters on the course put significant strain on my legs. The grueling part was having to climb the slopes back up from the turnaround point. It felt like an endless uphill battle.Unlike marathons held in urban areas, this course winds through mountain roads, and while I initially enjoyed the scenic surroundings, I eventually grew tired of it. Constantly either climbing or descending steep slopes, without any flat sections, forced me to endure nothing but pain.

Although I somehow managed to reach the finish, I found the course to be utterly brutal. I believe this is the most challenging 100 km marathon in Japan.
